Year 3 Curriculum Newsletter Spring Term 2014
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Happy New Year! I am sure that already the holidays feel like they were long ago as Year 3 started the year with a BANG by having a science week, so no doubt the children have filled your homes with beautiful music and shared many of the things they found out! Their instant enthusiasm was great to see and I am looking forward to an exciting and busy term ahead.
We all felt very proud last term following our Great Kapok Tree production. The children were outstanding and made the whole production thoroughly worthwhile. Your support with costumes, etc, was greatly appreciated, so a huge thank you for that. The money raised has been used to support three rainforest animals, an Asian elephant, a jaguar and a mountain gorilla through the WWF. The certificates are displayed on the notice board. We have also put up a large display of some of the children’s work on the display board outside the hall so please take a look.
Thank you for the support you have been giving in letting your children become more independent in the mornings. They are coping really well and as you see, are able to come into class and settle quickly to tasks set for them. The smiles on their faces as they come into school are a testament to how happy and confident they are feeling and is a pleasure to witness.
Curriculum
Literacy– The children will continue with work on spelling and grammar as well as looking at Roman myths and legends, traditional tales, poetry and instructions.
Science– We will be finding out about Sound, Rocks and Soils and Plants.
Humanities– Our topic will be about the Romans and will cross over into many areas of the curriculum.
Art– The children’s artwork will be related to our Romans topic. They will be producing mosaic artefacts and artwork from their research.
DT- The children will be designing and making wooden picture frames.
ICT– We will be focusing on using the internet for researching our topic and “Kar20uche” for animated storyboarding.
MFL– The children will be learning basic German words and phrases through songs and practical activities.
PE– Class 3 will have PE on Wednesdays and Fridays. Lessons will be outside, weather permitting as well as in the hall, so they will need trainers and outdoor kit as well as indoor gym kit.
Homework
The children will be given weekly spellings and number facts to learn, to be tested the following week.
We ask that you read with your child for 10 minutes every day as this really helps them to progress.
They will be given a piece of Maths and Literacy on Fridays to reinforce skills learnt, and so you can see what they have been learning in class.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please come in and speak to me.
Thank you
Ms Hanlon (Class 3)
